android users who own a Pixel 3a or Pixel 3a XL will soon need to upgrade if they want to continue receiving vital security updates from Google. The Mountain View tech firm has just alerted Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL users and revealed when the final security patch will be released for these 2019 handsets. Guaranteed security updates for these mid-range handsets had been promised through May 2022, but Google has given those handset owners a few more months of support, with the final update expected to roll out by July 2022.
Talk to 9to5GooglePixel and Android makers said: “In May 2019, during the launch of the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, we announced that the devices would receive three years of software updates and three years of software updates. security from the time our devices first appear on the Google Store. The latest update for Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will be rolling out to users by July 2022.”
For anyone who uses a Pixel 3a or Pixel 3a XL after this date, they will no longer receive security updates.
This would open users up to a whole host of threats in the future, as they wouldn’t be able to download the necessary patches from Google’s releases to address these flaws.
The danger of not being able to download these patches was highlighted recently by Google, which released an Android update that brought dozens of fixes, including fixes for two dangerous Linux flaws – one of which was the worst Linux vulnerability since years.
Luckily, if you buy a new Android phone these days, you’ll get longer software support than ever.
Previously, Android users could expect a maximum of three years of software support, but now Google and other Android phone makers are offering much longer support.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro offer five years of software updates, as do recent Samsung phones such as the Galaxy S22.
If you are interested in any of these phones, you can take advantage of some money saving deals running on handsets right now.
EE offers a saving of up to £192 on the Pixel 6 while Three is offering cashback of up to £250 plus free access to Disney+ when you switch to its network and register to get a new samsung galaxy phone.
