Introducing The Back Room, a new acoustic music venue coming to Downtown Berkeley

Attention fellow Berkeley residents (and Bay Area music fans in general): there’s a new music venue soon to be within our city limits in April, and it’s called The Back Room. Hailed to be an “intimate place for music,” the downtown space off University Ave is the brainchild of musician Sam Rudin, who fell in love with the classic Freight & Salvage space and wanted to model a new venue after it.

Rudin, who’s known to some as “Hurricane Sam,” is an acclaimed jazz pianist who played the old Freight on countless occasions since he moved to the East Bay from Philadelphia in 1981. Now that the venue has grown considerably since then to its current 420 -seat theater, it became Rudin’s wish to find a space where he could capture the humble vibe for acoustic music that was championed during his time. When he found the perfect place, the Back Room was born and filled with thrift store furniture.

The first big hurrah of the venue is its opening show with Laurie Lewis, the country and bluegrass artist who also performed often at the Freight, next month. She’ll be joined by friends and colleagues from the span of her music career. You can watch a live performance of hers below.
