The Google Assistant is one of the most useful tools out there. It offers many possibilities thanks to voice commands on many compatible devices.
But, it seems that the service is not working properly for many on smartphones. According to several reports, a recent update has “broken” Google Assistant voice commands (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).
Google Assistant not responding to voice commands for many users
As many already know, Google Assistant can be invoked with the “Ok Google” voice command. However, Google Assistant would not respond to voice commands.
This problem persists even after installing and uninstalling the Google app, and it occurs on multiple devices at the same time.
So when I got home I tried all my other phones, NONE answered Ok Google! I recycled voice mode on ALL 4 phones! checked to make sure they have been updated! Everything was fine! I took it a step further and checked if the voice functions worked on other apps – everything was fine! Tested Bixby on my Samsung, worked like a charm! Went back to Google – NOTHING! Assistant uninstalled on all 4 phones, reinstalled on all 4 phones – NOTHING! No help updating anything online! When initializing Hey Google via the button, there is also no volume – and ALL volume controls on my phone are active and working properly! I’m done with Google, hello Alexa!
A similar situation was reported a few weeks ago by users of Google Pixel 6 (Android 12) phones. But, this time it affects smartphones from other brands and with different versions of Android.
A recent update would have caused the problem, but there is a workaround
Several reports suggest that the problem started after a recent Google app update. Moreover, for some, the Google Assistant no longer even responds to written commands.
Google Assistant does not respond to any commands
Since the last Google app update, Google Assistant does not respond to any commands on my Samsung Galaxy S8. I followed all the suggested steps. Nothing works. It doesn’t even respond to typed commands, so I know it has nothing to do with voice training.
As soon as I uninstalled the update it works fine.
tried the new version again and after a few hours ok google is not responding. installed an old version 12.33.16 24 works perfectly. it’s been like this since september
However, there is a workaround that affected users can try. As the previous report pointed out, installing an older version (v12.33.16 24) makes everything work fine again.
The issue has already been escalated to Google
Recently, a Google product expert confirmed that the issue has escalated to higher levels. Therefore, we just have to wait for new official details about it to be shared.
Once more related details emerge, we will update this article with relevant information.
