Janis Ian - March 27
Who are the great songwriters in America today? Not the most popular.  Not the
richest.  Simply the greats. Ask any student of the form, and
Janis Ian will be counted
among them  The writer of Jesse, a song recorded by so many others that few
remember Ian wrote it; Stars, possibly the best song ever written about the life of a
performer, recorded by artists as diverse as
Mel Torme and Cher; and the seminal At
Seventeen, a song that brought her five Grammy nominations (the most any solo
female artist had ever garnered) in 1975, which is now reaching its third generation of
listeners.

Ian is a formidable talent, a force of nature.
Ella Fitzgerald called her “The best young
singer in America”.
Chet Atkins said “Singer? You ought to hear that girl play
guitar; she gives me a run for my money!”  Reviewers have called her live
performances “overwhelming to the spirit and soul”, and “drenched with such passion,
the audience feels they’ve been swept up in a hurricane.”  Not to mention her short
stories, her songs for film and television… and oh, yes.  She also runs a foundation,
named for her mother, that supplies college scholarships in perpetuity; they’re
working on their ninth.

They say a picture’s worth a thousand words.  In the world of music, hearing
the performer is better than reading a thousand words about them.

So check out the following videos of
Incendio:

If those videos don’t cause you to want to come see them, no words are likely
to.  But here are a lot fewer than a thousand words about them anyway
Incendio is comprised of bassist/guitarist Liza Carbe, keyboardist/guitarist Jean-Pierre Durand, and guitarist Jim Stubblefield – and
other musicians, as circumstances allow – all of whom compose most of the material for the group.   Musically, Incendio is a mix of
ethnic fusion music (
Latin, Middle Eastern and others) and traditional flamenco flavors. Both Durand and Carbe have numerous
television and film credits to their names, having done music for
Sister Sister, JAG, and Entertainment Tonight. Carbe has a degree in
classical guitar from Cal State Northridge and has performed with guitar impresarios such as Lindsay Buckingham and Santana's Leon
Patillo, and folksinger Sara Hickman.  Stubblefield is known for his impeccable musicianship in Middle Eastern works. He worked with
famed Kuwaiti singer Waleed Hamad during the early '90s.

Fans of
The John Jorgenson Quintet, The California Guitar Trio, Strunz & Farah – and most “World Music” acts who have played at
AMSD – will love this group, but so would almost anyone else who’d “take a chance”.

  • "Rare artist...strong poetry, complex melodies, clever wit." ~ Singout!

  • "Cheryl Wheeler is an anomaly on the acoustic music scene. She has a rare gift
for writing songs with lush melodies and lyrics of incredible beauty. On the
other hand, she is a master of quick wit." ~ FAME

It has always seemed as if there were two
Cheryl Wheelers, with fans of the New
England songwriter relishing watching the two tussle for control of the mic. There
is poet-Cheryl, writer of some of the prettiest, most alluring and intelligent ballads
on the modern folk scene. And there is her evil twin, comic-Cheryl, a militant defier
and savagely funny social critic. The result is a delightful contrast between poet and
comic.

Poet-Cheryl writes achingly honest songs of love and loss. Contrasting the prosaic
landscapes of her native small-town America with the hopelessly rootless life of the
traveling performer, she touches the common chords with any who feel the tug
between our busy, clamorous times and the timeless longing for simplicity and
silence. Her deceptively plain-spun songs have been hits for such mainstream stars
as
Suzy Bogguss ("Aces") and Dan Seals ("Addicted") and have been recorded by
everyone from
Bette Midler, Maura O'Connell, and Peter, Paul & Mary; to Juice
Newton
and Garth Brooks.

Comic-Cheryl comes on like Groucho-in-a-housecoat; a fiercely every day woman
with a barbed-wire tongue. Shredding the mores of our gossipy, greedy, trend-
obsessed culture, Wheeler always aims enough darts at herself to never seem
sanctimonious.
with Special Guest Lisa Sanders
As the two forces smooth their conflict, taking their separate turns and melding into the same artistic vision, Wheeler
emerges as a gifted and openhearted songwriter approaching the sure summit of her craft. More confidently and beautifully
than ever before, she proves that the poet and the comic are one and the same.

David Crosby calls them the best vocal group in the country and it's easy to hear why. Individually and
collectively, the Lennon cousins and brothers who comprise
Venice have been working studio vocalists for the
cream of California musicians from
Jackson Browne to Warren Zevon. Their sound is most often compared to the
Southern California sound of 1970's groups like the
Eagles, CSN and Fleetwood Mac.

Venice includes two sets of brothers who are cousins. Mark and Michael Lennon are brothers and their cousins
Kip and Pat Lennon are brothers. Musical talent definitely runs in the family - Kip and Pat’s older sisters are
The Lennon Sisters.
