Famed 1960s folk revival heroes the Jim Kweskin Jug Band came to life in
Cambridge MA, where many of the members were attending various colleges.
Spreading out from their coffeehouse beginnings in Cambridge and Greenwich
Village, they found themselves playing venues ranging from the Newport Folk
Festival to the psychedelic ballrooms of San Francisco, where they shared billing
with the likes of Big Brother and the Holding Company and the Doors. Jim led
the band on guitar and vocals, shaping its good-humored mix of old-time folk,
jazz, blues, and 1920s and '30s "whoopie music." Although it disbanded in 1968,
the band is still fondly remembered for its prime performances, albums like the
1965 Vanguard release, Jug Band Music, and for the memorable talents of
members like Jim, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur, and jug/washtub bass
virtuoso, the late Fritz Richmond.
Jim joined his old bandmate, and AMSD favorite, Geoff Muldaur last December
for an evening of great music and fun, and now returns with his own trio to
perform new and old songs in a show that's sure to bring a grin to the face and a
tap to the toes. Don't miss the chance to see this icon of American traditional
music.
