Ramblin' Jack Elliott - April 16 @ 7:30

Singer/songwriter David Wilcox combines a warm, baritone vocal tone and poetic
lyricism with a unique guitar style that blends soft jazz and folk sensibilities to create
a wonderfully intimate stage persona.
Often compared to James Taylor and John Martyn, Wilcox has built a solid fan base
for his well-crafted folk-pop tunes. The New York Times described Wilcox as "...a
superb guitarist whose sparkling accompaniments are anchored in a deep ringing
vibrancy."
A native of Ohio, Wilcox has based his career out of the South since the 1980s, when
he emerged as a live performer in North Carolina and won the music industry's
attention in Nashville. After getting a taste of the major-label ride on A&M for three
releases, he then recorded for other labels like Vanguard, and now he's released
Airstream, his fourth CD on the Colorado-based independent, What Are Records?
There's more than ever to sing about for Wilcox these days.

George Kahumoku Jr. is bringing his Grammy Award winning show “Masters of
Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar” to the mainland in March. There is plenty to
celebrate after winning the Grammy three straight years for “Best Hawaiian
Music Album.” Kahumoku, a master slack key guitarist, was also one of the
producers for the albums. Last year’s release Treasures Of The Hawaiian Slack
Key Guitar features two other esteemed artists who will be touring with
Kahumoku.
Slack key guitar has been the music of Hawaii since the 1800’s. Traditionally
played in island backyards, slack key has come to represent Hawaii as a true folk
art form and is now known and enjoyed around the world.
Dennis Kamakahi is one of Hawaii’s most prolific composers,
having written such famous Hawaiian standards such as Wahine
Ilikea, Pua Hone and Koke’e among many others. At the early age
of 19, his rich voice and superlative guitar skills led him to be
honored to replace the late Gabby Pahinui in the acclaimed band
The Sons of Hawaii. Now after 40 years as a professional musician,
he, too, can claim to be one of Hawaii’s most renowned artists
Richard Ho’opi’i is a living legend of Hawaiian music and master of
the traditional art form of Hawaiian falsetto. For many years he
performed with his brother Sol as the Ho’opi’i Brothers. He has
received the National Endowment for the Arts Folk Heritage Fellowship,
America’s highest honor for traditional artists. Charismatic on stage,
his lively music, thick white hair and infectious smile, make him one
of the most recognizable Hawaiian musicians.

Ramblin' Jack Elliott's Depression-era raising was redefined after seeing Gene Autry perform at a
rodeo in Madison Square Garden; a combination of guitar and livestock that set him afire; Elliott
chose the cowboy way at the age of 14, trading life at home for one on the rodeo circuit. By age twenty,
Elliott's rough-edged enthusiasm and musical instinct drew the attention of none other than the young
singer's avowed idol, Woody Guthrie, initiating a close, invaluable and life-long association.
Guthrie's hobo-grooming completed Elliott's transformation into a latter-day troubadour. One whose
love for a good song was equaled only by an abiding respect for his fellowman and a profound contempt
for injustice. Along the way, he inspired an army of musicians: mentoring young Bob Dylan, much as
Guthrie had for Elliott (Dylan has called Jack "his long-lost father" and later featured Elliott on his
notorious Rolling Thunder roadshow) ), inadvertently firing up the British Invasion (Elliott's "San
Francisco Bay Blues" was one of the first songs Paul McCartney learned to play; Mick Jagger bought
his first guitar after hearing Elliott busking on train platform in London), and influencing several
generations of musicians, Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Mick Ronson, Kris Kristoffersen, Robbie
Robertson, Bruce Springsteen and Beck.
Ramblin' Jack Elliott is a true American original. Back on the AMSD stage for his fourth appearance,
this will be a show you don't want to miss!
